Worker Moves Up in Construction Career
The EMBERS Staffing Solutions Employee of the Month program is made possible by our friends at Home Depot. They supply winners with $100 worth of tools and equipment to help them on their journey to becoming economically self-sufficient.
Meet Gil Rimmer
EMBERS Staffing Solutions‘ Gil Rimmer was recently awarded our December 2017 Employee of the Month! As a quiet but reliable and industrious worker, Gil was the obvious choice for this award. Recently hired for a full-time permanent role in a major construction company, we chatted with Gil before he left.
What brought you to EMBERS?
I came to EMBERS because I needed work. I’ve been at EMBERS longer than anyone here — about 20 years. Back in those days, there was just one staff member in the back office and no one else. That is how small EMBERS was. It was usually a week before you got any work. There was none of this “come in and go to work the next day”.
What were you doing before you found us?
I had been a commercial fisherman over in Vancouver Island for a long time. I just stuck to what I knew. I started at 13, and had been fishing since then. I enjoyed fishing, and I could have stayed there, but there wasn’t a lot of money in it, and I was getting too old to do that job.
What is your favourite part about working with EMBERS?
Once you get a job, usually you keep it, but you need to earn it. I’m very dependable, always show up for work, and I’m always there. I like my job I’m doing now. I’ve been working here since August, and it’s a full-time job. I’m not going to be hurting for work, that’s for sure.
How is your current job?
I like my boss. Some find him grumpy, but we get along. He likes me, and his boss likes me too. Initially, they weren’t going to take me because of some frustrating past experiences. After a couple weeks, they were surprised I wasn’t gone already. They liked how hard I worked, and they wanted to keep me.
How have we helped you in your career development?
Just recently EMBERS offered me hoist training. That could be really helpful for future jobs. I like the people at EMBERS, and am excited at what the future will bring now that I am certified.
When people ask you about EMBERS, what do you tell them?
I just tell them if they need work, there is usually lots of work at EMBERS. Go down and see them, get a job and money in your pocket. I like EMBERS. They always have work for me when I come in the door. To stick around at EMBERS, you need to do a good job, and always show up.
Congratulations to Gil for getting hired full-time at a local construction company! We are glad to have helped him gain the skills and experience he needed for this next chapter in his career.
