Worker Finds Stability in Temp Work
The EMBERS Staffing Solutions Employee of the Month program is made possible by our friends at Home Depot. They supply winners with $100 worth of tools and equipment to help them on their journey to becoming economically self-sufficient.
Meet Fraser McAulay
A career change and workplace injury have not slowed down Fraser McAulay. After navigating a major career change and a workplace injury, Fraser is now working steadily with EMBERS.
Having worked in construction in his youth, Fraser eventually moved to business and retail. Fraser was a manager at Radio Shack for 10 years before the company was sold and he decided to return to construction. After six to seven years of working in the construction industry, Fraser was injured on the job and had to take time off.
For three months, he was on medical and then regular EI while recovering from shoulder surgery. He was referred to EMBERS Staffing Solutions by a former coworker, and decided to check it out because it was close to his home. Fraser found his way to EMBERS Surrey in June last year.
Displaying an outstanding work ethic, Fraser secured two long-term jobs over the course of three months, one of them being his current job with Ventana.
“I was the first person from EMBERS to be at Ventana,” he said, “I thought I was the ambassador for EMBERS, because Jammeelyn (EMBERS Surrey’s Branch Manager) trusted me to do a good job there.”
Fraser has been employed by other local temp construction agencies but says he prefers EMBERS. “I tried three other places, and to me, EMBERS has been the best agency that I have worked for,” he said.
According to Fraser, one of the best parts of working for EMBERS is the quality of jobs. With his old employer, he was mainly digging ditches and pushing brooms, but EMBERS got him more meaningful work. “The two sites I’ve been on at EMBERS have been the best sites I’ve ever been on since being with a temp agency,” he remarked. “EMBERS have sent me to two great sites right off the bat which were long-term sites and very easy for me to access by bus.”
EMBERS is also more flexible than other agencies and sends its workers to sites where they will be respected. Fraser notes that he has never been forced to go back to a job that he did not like. “The bosses at my work site treat me well and are very safety conscious,” he said.
The work environment has a direct impact to one’s job satisfaction, Fraser has learned. “The enjoyment of the job keeps me here,” he said, “The people at Ventana are the nicest, and that is a big thing.”
“Responsible,” “reliable,” and “personable” are all words that capture what it means to be an excellent worker. They are also words that have been used to describe Fraser by supervisors and EMBERS staff members who have named him November’s Employee of the Month. Fraser’s work ethic and ability to overcome obstacles is impressive, and we are honoured to have worked alongside him during our first year of operations in Surrey.
