Turning Life Lessons Into a Small Business
Small Business owner Heidi Smith wears her heart on her sleeve, and she is building her clothing design business, Addictive Designs, with that as her main motivator.
After struggling with an addiction to prescription medication, Heidi came to EMBERS Ventures with a business concept inspired by her personal journey of recovery, looking for help in turning her dream into a reality.
“I had really been working on the idea for a few years, so when I came to EMBERS Ventures, my main goal was to get my business plan done and get help staying on track and focusing.”
Drawing inspiration from her own recovery journey, Heidi’s designs feature messages of hope and strength on simple t-shirts. For Heidi, her shirts are meant to help start conversations about addiction and mental health and the people that struggle with these issues.
“I am really driven by a passion to help other people on their journeys. I want to let people know that addiction can look differently and affect all sorts of people, and help break some of the stigma that still exists. “
“A lot of the people who buy my shirts have been touched by addiction – sometimes they are people who have dealt with addiction themselves, but often they are family members and friends of people who have struggled. It’s their way to show support for their loved ones.”
In the Build A Business program, Heidi learned the basics of launching and running her own small business and the discipline she needed to become a successful entrepreneur.
“It’s funny, the biggest lessons I learned at EMBERS wasn’t necessarily the program materials, they were learning to stay focused and how to delegate – things you need to be able to run a business.”
Since officially launching Addictive Designs in September 2015, Heidi is proud of how far her business has grown in this short span, and is excited for the next phase in her business.
“Don’t ever give up on your dreams and follow your heart. Starting your own business isn’t something that happens overnight, and you have to be driven by that passion – find something you truly believe in and keep going at it.”
