Small Business Owners Leap to Success
Since completing the EMBERS Ventures Grow A Business program in 2015, small business owners Nancy Lin and Julie Zu and their women-only studio Sunberry Fitness have grown leaps and bounds.
From offering Vancouver’s first Bunny Yoga classes to being nominated for a 2015/2016 Small Business BC Award for Best Online Marketer, Nancy and Julia have been busy implementing their Grow A Business marketing strategy.
“When we were in the Grow A Business program, we were really focusing on our marketing strategy with our coach, she really helped us focus and narrow down our approach,” says Nancy. “We had cut out unnecessary distractions and focus on being able to done thing really well.”
By focusing on online marketing and growing their online networks, Nancy and Julia have been able to build up their base of customers and turn them into an online community of Sunberry Fitness members.
Many of their recent successes have happened with the support of their customers.
“One of our customers actually nominated us for the Small Business BC Award! From there, it was up to us to promote it. We had flyers in our store and on Facebook getting our customers and supporters to vote for us online,” says Nancy. “We had such great support that we made the Top 10 in our category.”
Going into the final stages of the award now, Nancy and Julia are glad they have been able to share every phase with their customers!
“The response has been really good – when we posted the announcement that we made the Top 10 on Facebook, everyone was really excited to feel part of it too,” says Julia. “It is as much their award as it is ours.”
Even their viral-video inspiring Bunny Yoga Charity Class came from a customer suggestion.
“One of our customers has a sister that volunteers at a local bunny shelter,” says Nancy. “So we approached them and explained what we wanted to do. We had to work with your yoga instructors and the shelter to make sure that the bunnies would be okay during the class.”
After a successful first run of the class, the Sunberry Fitness teamed up with Bandaid for Bunnies again to offer their Bunny Yoga Charity class complete with real bunnies hopping around while students did their downward dog.
“The second time we offered the class, we sold out tickets in 2 days!”
“We are did another class again around Easter, we were originally planning on offering one session, but all our tickets sold out in less than 3 hours, so we are doing another session the same day,” says Nancy.
After a second successful round of bunny yoga, Nancy and Julia are now looking ahead at what the future holds for Sunberry Fitness. “When we first started our business, we didn’t have any training or real help. It was like being a blind turtle – bumping into things all the time and moving really slowly. Once we got help from EMBERS Ventures, it was so much easier to plan for the future of the business,” says Nancy. “We are now planning ahead and developing an online workout platform for our busy customers and even looking for a newer, bigger space.”
