Community Vote Ambassadors Connect DTES to Voting
Community Vote Ambassadors Played an Important Role this Election Season
How do you improve voter turnout in a city where less than 40% of residents vote? At EMBERS Eastside Works we partnered with the City of Vancouver to hire local Downtown Eastside (DTES) residents to engage with their community and encourage voting. Our Community Vote Ambassadors worked hard to let their peers know that it’s their right to vote and that every vote matters.
Meet EMBERS Community Vote Ambassador, Silvie
Silvie is a regular at EMBERS Eastside Works. She shows up with a positive attitude, volunteers in her community, and has a passion for politics. Consequently, EMBERS Eastside Works hired her as a Community Vote Ambassador.
“I wanted to work and I didn’t know where to start,” she said. “I came here to see if they have a job and they said they have an opportunity during the election.”
Silvie was never shy to start a conversation and point residents to voting booths. Furthermore, she quickly noticed a positive impact in her community during her shifts as one of our Community Vote Ambassadors.
“We went to talk to people and asked if they knew it was time to vote,” she said. “People often will not go vote, but we told them ‘listen, your vote will make a big difference.'”
Income Generation in the Heart of the Downtown Eastside
At EMBERS Eastside Works, our goal is to help people make connections to the world of work, earn income, and move along the Income Generation Continuum. We do this by partnering with businesses, non-profit organizations, and other agencies—such as the City of Vancouver—to create meaningful opportunities for people to generate income, increase their skills, and improve their livelihoods.
Ambassadors such as Silvie are key to ensuring our work opportunities—such as the Community Vote Ambassadors positions—reach the community. She was one of the first people to come into EMBERS Eastside Works and regularly refers her friends to our programs.
“Eastside Works is friendly, no judgment, and everyone who gets a job through here are very happy,” she said. “It changed a lot of people for better. Safer and better.”
