Build A Business Makes Dreams a Reality
Another season, and another 10-week Build A Business course begins! This term, we have nine entrepreneurs. Their business ideas range from a bookkeeping business to custom guitar repair service to body care products, and more. They’re ready to soak up their business training and bring the world their products or services.
Amidst all the back-to-school excitement, EMBERS Ventures‘ Program Manager Johanna Li steps back and reflects on why this course is one-of-a-kind in Vancouver.
Accessible and Affordable
Vancouver is known for its startup culture, but EMBERS Ventures stands out because of its commitment to accessibility and affordability. “Other comparable programs cost into the thousands,” says Johanna, “Whereas our Build A Business course can be as low as $50 for a participant depending on their income.”
EMBERS Ventures is all about making sure people who face barriers who are interested in self-employment can still access the support they need.
Business Success Training
“We work with individuals that may not have a high level of education or resources but have the drive and talent to become an entrepreneur,” says Johanna. “We nurture this spirit in these individuals and build their capacity so that they can be successful in their endeavours.”
As program alumni can attest, training is essential to any entrepreneur’s success. “So many small businesses fail within the first few years as they do not possess the proper training,” comments Johanna. “Taking a program such as ours helps to ensure a better rate of success.”
Johanna has seen the ups and downs of running a small business and has years of experience supporting and running businesses in Vancouver. She knows what makes a business thrive, and what can cause struggle.
Participants Grow as Entrepreneurs
Though entrepreneurs come from a wide range of backgrounds, all of the entrepreneurs participating in Build A Business have one thing in common: “They feel very strongly about what they want to offer the public and have great integrity in ensuring that their product or service is the best they can offer,” says Johanna. “It’s not just about being their own boss or owning their own business for them – it’s about sharing their skills and talents with the world.”
In addition to an enthusiastic entrepreneurial spirit, participants also possess resilience and determination. This consistently impresses Johanna, who says, “Many of our participants have experienced many life challenges, but they continue to persevere and truly believe they can grow and thrive as entrepreneurs.”
“It is also quite amazing to see the difference from the start of class to the final presentations,” she adds. “It becomes obvious that our participants learn a whole new set of skills, knowledge and vocabulary and are able to talk confidently about the future of their business.”
As Program Manager, Johanna’s always on the lookout for new participants, sponsors, or business leaders for Build A Business’ panel presentations. Want to get involved? Contact her. She’d love to hear from you.
