Here at EMBERS Staffing Solutions, we meet people everyday who are working to rebuild their lives and we love to celebrate the stories of our workers who have gotten ahead and turned their lives around.
To start off 2016 right, we want to take the time to shine a light on some of our great partners. Our partners vary – from large development and construction companies to mid-sized and smaller companies – but all share one thing in common: they are helping people who face barriers to employment get back to work.
The first in a series of profiles highlighting our valued partnerships is Ameresco Canada.
When Ameresco Canada – one of the country’s largest energy management companies – teamed up with BC Housing to renovate 13 Downtown Eastside Single-Room-Occupancy (SRO) Hotels they were tasked with a local hiring hurdle they weren’t sure how to tackle.
As part of the SRO Renewal Project, Ameresco was required to hire the equivalent of 15 full-time employees for one year – roughly 30,000 hours – of labour from the Downtown Eastside. They turned to EMBERS Staffing Solutions.
“EMBERS Staffing Solutions has been an important part of this project for us,” says Ameresco VP of Western Canada, Doug Wall. “When we first started, the Downtown Eastside hiring quota was something of a potential liability. But it has turned into an important element of the whole project, and really one of the major positives.”
For Doug and his team at Ameresco, working with EMBERS Staffing Solutions has meant that not only do they get quality construction workers, but also a sense that they are helping the community they are working to rebuild.
“You feel like you are doing some good in the community to give folks a chance to work,” explains Doug.
With just over a year left until construction is complete, and the final push is underway, Doug says the best part of the project has been seeing the difference that socially responsible hiring can have.
