Worker Finds Hope for a Meaningful Career
The EMBERS Staffing Solutions Employee of the Month program is made possible by our friends at Home Depot. They supply winners with $100 worth of tools and equipment to help them on their journey to becoming economically self-sufficient.
EMBERS Staffing Solutions offers people more than just a job placement – for many, it offers a chance to start over and build a new life.
One week after he moved to Vancouver, newly-immigrated Heriberto was looking to get his footing in a new city. EMBERS offered him a chance at a steady pay cheque while he got settled.
“I came to EMBERS on a Thursday, got introduced to everything on Friday and started working that day.”
Before coming to Vancouver, Heriberto lived in the United States for 20 years as an undocumented worker from Mexico. Without American citizenship, he was unable to secure meaningful work.
Heriberto dreamed of becoming a teacher, but after a few years at college, the authorities required proper citizenship and his dreams were put on hold.
To earn money, Heriberto worked various jobs, but missing documents limited his earning potential.
“They never pay you correctly when you don’t have your documents,” he said.
“I was worried because it seemed like I wouldn’t have anything for my future, so I thought about going back to Mexico.”
All of that changed when he met his future Canadian husband who was vacationing in the US. After a year-and-a-half of long-distance dating, they got married, and Heriberto moved up north.
Upon gaining his Canadian residency, he set out again to accomplish his goals. And with EMBERS, Heriberto has found the hope and support he didn’t realize he needed.
“I am very grateful for EMBERS for giving me opportunities. The people and the companies are just phenomenal. It feels like family. They always care about you, and they always have jobs for you. They want you to keep growing and be successful.”
Recently, Heriberto pursued training to become a Construction Safety Officer, a role with increased responsibility and pay. With his new education and experience, Heriberto has gained a newfound sense of confidence and stability. In the future, Heriberto may resume his education by completing his bachelor’s degree, and still hopes to teach high school one day.
