Worker Finds Fresh Start in Construction
The EMBERS Staffing Solutions Employee of the Month program is made possible by our friends at Home Depot. They supply winners with $100 worth of tools and equipment to help them on their journey to becoming economically self-sufficient.
Life doesn’t always meet our expectations, and sometimes, tough decisions need to be made. Moving and changing careers are big decisions, yet they remind us that it’s never too late to start something new.
Leonard, an EMBERS Staffing Solutions worker in his 50s, understands the joys and challenges of starting afresh. After working for over 18 years in landscaping in New Brunswick, Leonard packed up his bags and moved out west in search of greener pastures.
“The economy back home wasn’t great, and it was tough to find work.” he says. “For the same job that you’d get, it would be $13 here, but it’s minimum wage there, $10. And after my mom passed away, I decided I needed a change of scenery.”
Within two days of being in Vancouver, Leonard learned about EMBERS Staffing Solutions through the shelter he stayed at. He went straight to EMBERS, and been working here ever since. He’s currently working as a General Labourer with Wesgroup, a company he’s thankful to be working with.
“People at Wesgroup are really open and easy to communicate with. When I go into work in the morning, most people seem to be half-decently cheery and joke around. One person with a bit of a smile or cracks a joke? That will set the tone for the whole day.”
Transitioning from landscape to construction was challenging at first, and it required some specialized skills that Leonard didn’t have.
“This is my first time on a construction site, but I like it because it’s given me the opportunity to learn new things and tools. I would stay in this industry for the long term, if I could.”
Leonard is no stranger to hard work, and he thrives when given tough tasks.
“I find that if I’m working really hard, my day goes by in a snap. If I come in in the morning and they give me a big stockpile of work, more than what I could do in a whole week, that’s great. Then I know what I’m doing and I love it. I like that at the end of the day, I’ve accomplished something. I rest better at night knowing I’ve done something that day.”
“I take pride in my work.” Leonard adds. “I like knowing that it’s done right, and hearing the boss say, ‘Good job, Leonard.’ I don’t like rushing halfway through something, doing a lousy job, and it’s not done right. My goal is to always go one step above what the boss expects.”
Leonard’s positive attitude, diligence, and professionalism has been noted by EMBERS Staffing Solutions staff, who’ve named him February’s Employee of the Month. With an amazing work ethic, we’re confident Leonard is well on his way to building a career he’ll be proud of in Vancouver’s construction industry.
