Worker Builds Carpentry Career at EMBERS
The EMBERS Staffing Solutions Employee of the Month program is made possible by our friends at Home Depot. They supply winners with $100 worth of tools and equipment to help them on their journey to becoming economically self-sufficient.
Meet Sam Sinclair
As one of the only female carpenters at EMBERS, Sam stands out among her peers. Though it’s typical for more males to be drawn to carpentry, it’s no surprise to Sam’s friends and family that she would gravitate toward the trade.
“My dad’s a carpenter, and growing up, I would often help my dad out with his work,” she said. “I assisted him on little projects for our family, like fixing the bathroom.”
Sam completed her level one carpentry training a few years after high school, but finding work in her hometown of Winnipeg proved to be a challenge. Realizing she needed to find better work opportunities, Sam moved to Vancouver where her friend lived.
While looking for work, Sam learned about EMBERS Staffing Solutions and the relevant paid work experience it would provide. Sam came in for an orientation and has been here ever since. Starting off as a General Labourer, Sam became a Carpenter’s Helper in two months. Now two years later, Sam is working with EllisDon on the Parq Vancouver resort and casino project, where she’s helping to construct the heavy-duty industrial kitchens.
The more Sam works in carpentry, the more she realizes the trade is a good fit for her interests. “I really like seeing the finished project,” she says. “And I like knowing that I did a good job.”
For someone who started off at EMBERS with little professional experience, Sam’s skill set and confidence has grown, and she now has a resume she can be proud of. Thanks to the positive atmosphere at EMBERS, Sam feels supported in her career development. “EMBERS is a nice environment,” she says. “And the staff have been good to me. They are really friendly.”
Sam plans on completing her level two carpentry training in the fall at BCIT, and hopes to secure permanent, full-time work as a carpenter someday. The positive attitude, organizational abilities, and professionalism Sam displayed will take her career far, and we are glad to have been a part of her career journey.
