Temp Work Proves to be a Smart Choice for Career-Oriented Worker
The EMBERS Staffing Solutions Employee of the Month program is made possible by our friends at Home Depot. They supply winners with $100 worth of tools and equipment to help them on their journey to becoming economically self-sufficient.
Temp work is often a smart way to find permanent work in an industry, but it’s also a excellent option when life requires you to be flexible. EMBERS Staffing Solutions‘ worker Moku learned about the benefits of temping while completing his undergraduate degree.
As an SFU student studying physics and chemistry, Moku completed his co-op education program and found himself struggling to find work in his field between semesters.
“Companies wanted to hire people long term and not for a few months,” he said. “EMBERS was an easier choice because it’s temporary work.”
Moku learned about EMBERS through a friend and has been working with EMBERS during school breaks since 2015.
“With EMBERS, it’s flexible. You come here and get sent out to work. There’s no stress of applying and writing resumes.” he said, laughing.
Since working with EMBERS, Moku has been working with EllisDon on the Parq Vancouver project, an experience he would have never have had if he only worked in chemistry and physics.
“I’ve learned about buildings and the work it takes to construct them. It’s something I would have never experienced if I was only in my field.” he said. “It’s interesting to see how all these high rises have started until they’re finished.”
A self-starter with a positive attitude, Moku looks forward to the day when he’s back in the lab. Even though he doesn’t see a future for himself construction, the soft skills Moku has gained while doing skilled labour are invaluable.
“I’ve developed stronger people skills through working and interacting with different individuals who aren’t from my field,” he said.
Moku has been able to remain self-sufficient in Vancouver because of his work at EMBERS, and is glad that he’s been here for the past few years.
“I appreciate how EMBERS has been so helpful to me. I’ve been kept busy since I’ve been in school, and haven’t had to stress about looking for work.”
Having graduated recently in December, Moku hopes to find work that better aligns with his studies in chemistry and physics.
“Right now, I need to pay off fees from my last semester. They’re almost paid off, so I’ll be looking into my field again. But EMBERS keeps me busy while I’m looking for work.”
EMBERS’ staff have noted Moku’s exemplary work ethic, friendliness, and cheerful attitude, and have honoured him as their March employee of the month. The traits that Moku embodies will help Moku transition and thrive in whatever field he works in, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for him.
