In Focus - ESS Client Profile
Alan Arcand
After 15 years of working as a
finishing carpenter, Alan Arcand left the business. While
volunteering at the Salvation Army, EMBERS Staffing Solutions (ESS) came calling. ESS recruited him on the spot for work on 2010 Olympic
construction venues and then placed him with a community centre and a
seniors' centre in need of renovation work in time for the Olympic torch
relay. Alan secured new contracts with passing neighbours who admired
his work.
Months
later, Alan has more work than he can handle and a newfound sense of
confidence. "EMBERS has been incredibly accommodating and supportive,
and will show up on the work site to see if I need anything," he says.
"They always go above and beyond the call of duty, offer a personal
touch unlike most staffing agencies, and are experts at problem solving.
With that kind of support, I feel like I can tackle almost anything.
I've already referred five to six people to them, and they have all
found permanent work, some have even found their long term career."
ESS assisted Alan in reinstating his business. By screening
potential employers, assigning positions, preparing paperwork, and by
providing tools and training, ESS offered Alan administrative support and even referred two
junior carpenters for him to hire. "When fitting a 200-year-old door
onto a heritage house door frame there's no room for error," says Alan.
"I find I'm better able to concentrate on the task at hand. Having ESSsupport has made all the difference for me."

Mass-Recruiting Madness
Staff member Emma Gallant shares her experience of the
madness that ensued during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and being part of
the Vancity celebration crew:
"Prior to the Olympics, ESS was
used to sending out 5 to 10 workers a day. During the Olympics, The Bay
contacted us to provide 50 workers a night for every night of the week
to unload merchandise trucks, stock shelves and tidy displays. This was
in addition to the giant contract coming up at the end of the Olympics
to tear down temporary structures - a herculean task running 24 hours a
day encompassing 3 shifts of 20 workers per day. We placed ads and had mass intakes - up to 40
people crammed into the Embers office at a time where every single staff
member pitched in to interview and gather all the necessary
information. It was crazy but we pulled it off!
V After
Dark! ESS also helped
Vancity staff party it up at V After
Dark, an event for Vancity employees. Over 2,200 attendees
enjoyed the sights and sounds of the city with live musicians, dancers
and artists from the community all sharing their talents for a night
out. Vancity chose to partner with ESS because of the links to the
community and EMBERS' reputation for being friendly, helpful and fun.
The only staffing agency of its kind in
Canada, ESS offers a socially responsible alternative to typical
employment agencies while providing our candidates with a ladder of
opportunities to improve their skills and advance their careers. Our
candidates are talented, reliable and tested construction, warehouse and
office workers. Contact ESS today
for more information and to meet your temporary staffing needs.

beginning of May."
